It appears that creativity is beyond the ability of the majority of social media users, who just look, listen and download, rather than contributing to the information available online. Social media users are wallflowers when it comes to content creation. It appears that they are just not able to understand its intricacies and even though the amount of interest in the Internet has grown substantially, the number of people who actually contribute is starting to shrink.

The well known online researcher Forrester tells us that content creation is not on the radar of most people, online. They conducted a survey within North America, Europe and the Asia-Pacific region and concluded that although interest in social media and the Internet moves forward apace, the number of people who provide content creation is moving in the opposite direction.

This may come as no surprise to some people with knowledge of how the social media phenomenon actually plays out. Indeed it is estimated that only 10% of those who engage on Twitter are also involved in content creation. Fully 90% of Twitter members are passive, or actually lose interest and fade away after a short period of engagement.

The Internet is, of course, based almost entirely on information and fresh content creation. Therefore, the statistics are quite eye-opening. Without focused, fresh and updated information the Internet would be very static indeed and not be so dominant in our daily lives. The majority of people who populate social media online can be adjudged to be happy to leave content creation to the experts and just pick through the information that is subsequently provided.

Is content creation simply too difficult a proposition for the majority? Does this picture of stagnation represent an ominous sign for the future of social media and the Internet in general? Indeed, content creation requires a certain mindset and ability and a predisposition to provide focused, specific content. Most people fall outside of this spectrum. This is not really a surprise, though, as the majority of information has always been provided by the minority of content creation experts.

Blogging has grown to be a potent force in its own right over the last few years, as more and more people register and start to create their own piece of cyberspace. Software and tools have become far more widespread and platforms such as WordPress more intuitive. While it may be relatively easy to create a blog, most people still tend to flounder when it comes to the actual content creation itself on a regular basis.

Blogging is taking on a new look with the meteoric rise of Facebook. The individual profile page often takes on the look of a blog as members seek to inform us about their lives, their hobbies, projects or small business ventures. We shouldn’t expect to see very high standards of creativity here, though, if we believe Forrester’s research.

To be of any use whatsoever, content creation must deliver actual value. We can expect the Internet to be a very productive medium for our use moving forward, so long as information contained within is informative, interesting, educational or entertaining. This level of content creation, it appears, is beyond the scope of most individuals!
